Regional Breeding Director California – PanAmerican Seed; a division of Ball Horticultural Company

Our world class breeding and product development organization is looking for a Regional Breeding Director to join our company’s international research organization.

The Position:

The objective of this position is to lead an experienced group of ornamental plant breeders in the further development of our breeding and product development pipeline. As part of an international plant breeding team you will also have ornamental breeding projects of your own. In conjunction with internal colleagues as well as collaborators from key global technology providers you will lead in the effort to accelerate and enhance our breeding and product development programs. You will be based in California at one of the PanAmerican Seed Company research stations (Santa Paula or Guadalupe) and report to the Director of Plant Breeding; PanAmerican Seed. This position will be expected to provide leadership through the formulation and establishment of new research ideas. You will lead breeders in developing new research projects and enhance the creativity of the group while providing research and project leadership of a defined scope. This research is expected to result in new knowledge and new/improved technologies to develop novel plant varieties and enhance existing varieties while achieving regional and global breeding goals. Interaction with the Research Director, Regional Breeding Directors and Product Group Director will be essential as will facilitating interaction within and between research locations around the world.

Tasks and responsibilities:

1. Lead a diverse team of plant breeders committed to developing new products through innovation in breeding outcomes while contributing to the development of new techniques and tools targeting faster development timelines and value added traits.
2. Represent the company in our relationships with competitors, external technology providers and others in the industry.
3. Introduce and implement new technology and tools in the breeding development process.
4. Actively direct and support staff development and encourage staff recognition at all levels, stressing the importance of global teamwork.
5. Foster strong and effective relationships with all locations and departments to ensure products are in tune with the requirements of the markets.
6. Maintain, build and leverage internal and external networks to support achievement of business goals.

Scope of Responsibility:

1. Responsible for managing capital/operating budgets for assigned area in support of internal staff and external collaborators.
2. Ensure that corporate policies, R & D policies, and other policies/practices are followed when conducting research projects.
3. Other duties and responsibilities determined by the needs of the Company/Research Director/Breeders.

Your profile:

1. M.S. or Ph.D. (preferred) in Plant Breeding /Molecular Biology/Genetics or related field within the Plant Sciences and/or the Life Sciences.
2. A minimum of 5 years of experience in the management of breeding programs and personnel.
3. Experience in the management of researchers and research programs related to plant breeding (preferably ornamental) and agricultural/horticultural product development.
4. Experience in the application of up to date techniques for plant breeding.
5. Must be team-oriented with the ability to provide guidance, team spirit and leadership;
6. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to travel as required.
7. Working experience in or with the ornamental horticulture industry preferred.
8. Ability to work in a matrix organization with a minimum of hierarchy.
9. Excellent English language skills.
10. Understanding of freedom-to-operate issues and intellectual property.

Facility Manager – Santa Paula, California Research Station

Our world class breeding and product development organization is looking for a Facility Manager at our Santa Paula California research location to join our company’s international research and product development organization.

The Position:

In the role of Facility Manager, your key responsibilities will be to lead a group of greenhouse and field specialists in support of breeding, product development, marketing and sales in support of the global PanAmerican Seed assortment. You will be based in California at the Santa Paula location and report to the Ball Horticultural Company Research Director. This position will be expected to provide leadership through the formulation, and establishment of best practices in growing and plant maintenance to enhance the efficiency of the group while providing leadership and support to the staff as needed. Interaction with Research Director, Production Director, Regional Breeding Directors and Product Group Director and their respective staff as well as the Director of Marketing and Sales and Sales staff will be essential as will implementing and facilitating best practices in growing and research support within and between research locations around the world.

Tasks and responsibilities:

1. Coordinate the planning, production and maintenance of greenhouse and field grown plant material to support research, product development and marketing and sales goals.
2. Maintain an effective IPM program and ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines.
3. Optimize plant nutrition and greenhouse and field environments to produce specified plant performance; manage space utilization by crop and purpose.
4. Manage the overall maintenance and improvements to the facility.
5. Manage the facility budget, as well as function as point-person for on-going construction projects and other projects as required.
6. Communicate expectations and objectives, provide feedback on grower performance via employee meetings, etc.
7. Evaluate individual grower performance. Measure quality and productivity, address performance issues, conduct performance evaluations with grower staff.
8. Provide ongoing development opportunities for the staff through training and coaching.
9. Provide cross training to all employees to improve flexibility and maximize efficiency.

Scope of Responsibility:

1. BS or equivalent in horticulture with 5-7 years’ experience in a supervisory/management, production, or other professional horticulture capacity.
2. Experience with greenhouse facilities in a management role required. Additionally, field management and farm machinery experience is strongly preferred.
3. Basic mechanical/maintenance skills.
4. The ability to diagnose root cause problems and work with and through others to implement solutions.
5. Self-motivated with the ability to handle multiple projects and priorities.
6. Participate in night rounds and be on call for emergency situations as necessary.
7. Must currently have or obtain a QAL, QAC License.
8. Must be team-oriented with the ability to provide guidance, team spirit and leadership.
9. Excellent English language skills with a proficiency in Spanish preferred.

Product Development Administrator

Ball FloraPlant is a leading brand of vegetatively propagated plant varieties that has won critical acclaim for its ability to produce clean, healthy cuttings. Its dynamic breeding program has produced the award-winning Black Velvet Petunia, and popular introductions like Presto Geraniums and Voltage Yellow Ostepspermum. We are looking for a talented Product Development Associate for our Arroyo Grande, CA location to support our Selecta product development as well as provide R & D support to the Ball FloraPlant management team. Duties will include working directly with Selecta Product Manager, Partner Genetics Manager and Trials Coordinator within the Ball FloraPlant Research and Development Team to provide on-going communication and support for Selecta product development and marketing, BFP database management, 3rd party genetics support as well as other responsibilities as required by BFP management.

Selecta Support: 60%

• Manage product launch checklist;
• Work closely with Selecta Product Manager to ensure support for Selecta product development;
• Build and maintain SAP database of trial material to source for North American trials;
• Responsible for coordinating with Selecta to ensure materials are sent to various trialing locations (example: sample program, marketing events, targeted advanced trials, confidential trials, internal advancement trials, etc.) including planning, sourcing, execution and follow-up;
• Maintain Global Product List updates as product assortment changes are made and communicate appropriately; work with BFP personnel to ensure programs are accurate in SAP;
• Main point of contact for Selecta communication to and from Ball FloraPlant staff which includes marketing questions, new variety data sheets, catalog review, photography, questions on assortment status, etc.
• This role will also work with Ball FloraPlant R&D on culture research coordination;
• Support Selecta program at various marketing events: Season Premier, Week 8, CAST, Walmart, Cultivate;

Ball FloraPlant R&D Support: 40%

• Database management and implementation; maintain and supervise proper software functionality throughout the team.
• Ball FloraPlant and Partner genetics assortment support; read trials, register results and generate reports from trials (e.g.: pictures, database input, etc.).
• Organization of production trials from all crops at the production facilities in Central America, in coordination with farms, sales, logistics and Product Launch and Assortment Manager.
• Coordination, trials and reports of the mix combo’s assortment from Ball FloraPlant and Selecta assortment, working directly with the product designer.

Requirements:

List of skills, knowledge and abilities (competencies) required/critical to the performance of this position
1. Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field or equivalent experience in a greenhouse, production or related environment;
2. Proven computer skills including demonstrated proficiency with:
a. Microsoft Office products: Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access.
b. Ability to maintain, manage and analyze data from multiple sources
3. Knowledge of SAP and managing content management systems will be strongly considered. Demonstrated ability to prioritize and handle tasks with a high degree of accuracy.
4. Ability to focus as a team, not only as an individual, and communicate within all levels within the organization with strong documentation and follow-up skills.
5. Comfortable in a working environment with competing priorities and multiple directions.
6. Experience in ornamental plants and an intermediate knowledge of Spanish is a plus.
7. Ability and willingness to travel as required.

Scope of Responsibility

Travel: This position has limited travel requirements, approximately 15-20% of time in support of key events.
Staff: This position does not have anyone reporting to it.
Budget: This position is not directly responsible for managing a budget.
