Coming Home to Roost
Jennifer Polanz
This month a new book, “Gardening With Chickens: Plans and Plants for You and Your Hens” taps into the popular urban trend of backyard chickens raised for eggs. Author Lisa Steele is a blogger at Fresh Eggs Daily and has her own flock that help serve to fertilize, till, weed and control bugs in her kitchen garden. “This is where the magic happens,” Lisa says. “Combining gardening with chickens is a yin-and-yang practice.”
The book is published by Cool Springs Press and is Lisa’s guide to managing a backyard flock for the benefit of the garden. It’s separated out by seasonal activity and covers what plants to avoid with chickens, garden design that feeds both family and flock, and a list of most valuable crops and herbs, among other topics.
