Missed the Bulls Eye

Jennifer Polanz
Target Corp. is checking out of Canada less than two years into its expansion up north, according to a January article on Bloomberg.com. Target had opened 133 stores there, employing 17,600 people and amassed more than $2 billion in operating losses since the Canadian division began in 2011. According to the story, Chief Executive Officer Brian Cornell had made Canada a top priority after starting the job in August. He toured operations throughout the country and found woes that “ranged from empty shelves to prices being higher than at locations in the U.S.” Cornell took over after previous CEO Gregg Steinhafel left after a notorious data breach and sales slump.
