Cheap Tricks: Holiday Sensations
| Green Profit Staff

>> Published Date: 12/27/2012

The Green Profit staff ventured out during the holiday season to find all kinds of fun and funky ideas to share for next year. Because you’re not sick of the holidays yet, right? You still have to do your shopping at the gift markets! So keep these in mind while perusing the aisles at your favorite market (or while going through your warehouse and staging areas during the offseason).

[1] Please Touch
Customers are often hesitant to shop off of beautifully decorated Christmas trees. Don’t let them be hesitant, make it clear with a sign like this one from Fairview Greenhouses & Garden Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

[2] Pretty Pallets
Who says stack ‘em high and let ‘em fly? How about putting pallets to a greater use, like Blumen Gardens in Sycamore, Illinois. They’ve created natural backdrops and benches with them, tying into that upcycling trend that’s so popular these days.

[3] Great Pots
Looking for ways to dress up those poinsettias and kalanchoes even more? Gale’s Westlake Garden Center outside of Cleveland, Ohio, found these awesome containers to add even more value to holiday hits.

[4] Rock The Vote

Homewood Nursery & Garden Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, holds an annual “election” when customers can vote for their favorite poinsettia and win a prize. Owner Joe Stoffregen says they average about 800 votes every year.

[5] Hometown Memories
Making a connection to home is important during the holidays. That’s why Petitti Garden Centers in Cleveland, Ohio, offer a beautiful, custom-designed ornament each year that highlights a Cleveland landmark. The ornament this year is Little Italy and they often sell out before Christmas.

[6] Itty Bitty Beauties
Joe Stoffregen at Homewood Nursery grows mini 2.5-in. poinsettias he calls “Baby Bloomers,” which have been a big hit this year. Joe estimates they’ll sell close to $8,000 worth just on that bench. One of the reasons is the cute tie-ins he puts on an end-cap. The original idea was to offer them as teachers’ gifts, but Joe said that people are buying a whole bunch at once to use as hostess’ gifts and table décor. Price is $3.99 per Baby Bloomer and $4.99 for the snowman holder. GP
