A Good Start, But No Guarantees

The year is off to a good start, with January and February spending results indicating the momentum experienced in the fourth quarter of 2011 is continuing into 2012, according to the Great American Group LLC, a provider of appraisal services. The outlook for the spring season is relatively positive, but overall 2012 consumer spending remains uncertain. Looking forward, rising gas prices may cool consumer spending during the summer, as they did in 2011.
“Retailers on opposite ends of the spectrum have performed well, with luxury retailers capitalizing on increased spending by this customer demographic, and discount and dollar stores also showcasing continued growth and strength. However, some mid-tier players struggled to capture the consumers’ dollars,” said David Triompo, Great American Group’s director of consumer products. GP
