Get our your 10-gallon hat and head to Frisco, Texas, November 8-9, for the third annual Retail Experience, sponsored by Green Profit in partnership with OFA—an Association of Floriculture Professionals. The Retail Experience is a two-day education program designed specifically for anyone in the garden center industry looking for strategies to take their business to the next level of excellence.
Education Focus: Sustainability
This year’s Retail Experience has a decidedly “sustainable” feel to it, thanks in large part to it being held in conjunction with the GrowerTalks Sustainability Conference. But it’s also one of the hottest consumer trends going. So, how can your garden center profit from sustainability?
Day One of Retail Experience—following right on the heels of the Sustainability Conference—is filled with sustainability-themed educational sessions. The day kicks off with a special presentation by Joe Lamp’l, a.k.a. Joe Gardener, entitled “Is Sustainability Really a Consumer Trend?” Big boxes and name-brand retailers have positioned their marketing messages to incorporate sustainability. What can and should retailers in the true “green” industry do to position themselves as sustainability leaders? Joe has some words of advice.
The day continues with other educational sessions designed to help attendees understand the sustainability topic. Presentations and panel discussions focus on planning and implementing sustainability at retail and learning the “green” language to benefit your staff, business and customers. One of the most anticipated sustainability sessions will feature representatives from three popular garden centers as well as a “green” communications expert, Gillian Christie, guiding you in “Successful Sustainability Marketing Messages.” This two-part series will cover what’s being done inside and outside our industry, and what marketing angles really work. Panelists will give specific examples of what they did to market their message, and Christie will help you adapt them to your own use. The day caps off with the wildly popular Dinner With Peers! Dining around has never been so much fun!

Retail Live!
Day Two begins with a morning tour of Dallas-area garden centers. Everyone will hop on the buses to visit Jacksons Home & Garden (www.thepatiostoreandmore.com), Calloway’s Nursery (www.calloways.com) and North Haven Gardens (www.nhg.com). These three retailers represent a diversity of retail concepts and are sure to spark ideas for your own business.
That afternoon, back in the seminar rooms, attendees will take a more detailed look at their morning tour sites during a session called Tours Reloaded. Retail experts Terri Coldreck and Nancy Durand will present an interactive show-and-tell slideshow recap in which everyone can discuss the displays and concepts seen at each garden center.
Other sessions that afternoon include topics covering human resource issues, financial sustainability and garden center ideas from around the world and close to home.
